Navigating the healthcare system can be tough, especially if you simply can’t afford insurance or out-of-pocket care. Medicaid could be the answer you’re looking for. There are currently 72.2 million people covered through Medicaid as of November 2020.
The program provides health coverage to eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people with disabilities. Although Medicaid a federal program, the benefits are administered by the states.
Determining Eligibility
Eligibility for Medicaid is largely dependent on financial need. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 created the opportunity for states to expand Medicaid to cover nearly all low-income Americans under age 65.
You are eligible to apply for Medicaid if:
- You’re pregnant and need financial assistance. Both yourself and your child will be covered (single and married individuals may apply).
- You’re the parent of a child under 18 years old and need financial assistance.
- Children living at least 133% below the federal poverty level (FPL) in every state (most states cover children to higher income levels)
- You’re a teenager living alone and in need of financial assistance. Some states allow for coverage for dependents up to the age of 21.
- You’re over the age of 65 (you may apply for both Medicare and Medicaid coverage).
- You have certain disabilities (coverage and costs may be different from state to state).
- States were given the option to extend eligibility to adults, under 65, with income at or below 133% of the FPL.
If you were told you didn’t qualify for Medicaid in the past, you may qualify under the new rules. To find out how to apply, visit: https://www.healthcare.gov/medicaid-chip-program-names/
