2023 List of 7 States That are Giving Stimulus Payments

In 2023, these states will be providing stimulus payments to qualifying residents:

  • Colorado
  • California
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Illinois
  • Idaho
  • Massachusetts

Keep in mind even if your state isn’t on this list, the only true way to get 100% accurate information is to go to your state directly. They will have the most recent information on any potential stimulus payments and keep their residents in the loop!

Colorado

Qualifying residents in Colorado could get payments of up to $1,500! The amount that will be provided will depend on a person’s tax filing status. For example:

  • Single filers get $750
  • Joint filters get $1,500

This stimulus payment comes from extra revenue the state made during the 2021 to 2022 fiscal year. By law, the additional funds need to go back to qualifying taxpayers (unless voted otherwise).  In order to qualify for the payment a resident must:

  • Have filed their state income tax return no later than October 17th, 2022
  • Be at least 18 years old by December 31st, 2021
  • Be a Colorado resident for the entire 2021 income tax year
  • Either filed their state income tax return for 2021 income tax year or applied for a Property Tax/Rent/Heat Credit (PTC) Rebate.

Certain people can expect their payments to come by the 31st of January, 2023.

California

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of California? It’s probably not the fact that this state has been providing payments since October 2022 and payments are continuing into January 2023. When people receive these one-time payments, they will come in the form of either a:

  • Debit card
  • Direct deposit payment

Regardless of how it’s received, only qualifying individuals can get these payments. This includes those that:

  • Were California residents for a minimum of 6 months throughout the 2020 tax year.
  • Filed their 2020 taxes no later than October 15th, 2021.
  • Are a resident of California at the time that the payment is issued.
  • Meet income requirements.
  • Were not eligible to be a dependent on another person’s 2020 tax return.

The amount that these payments are worth depends on a person’s tax filing status. For example:

  • $1,050 is available for those that are married or RDP filing jointly with a dependent
  • $700 is available for those that are married or RDP filing jointly without a dependent

The specific payment amount will vary! So make sure to direct any questions to the state if you are unsure of how much you may be able to receive.

New Jersey

For those that live in New Jersey, they have up until January 31st, 2023 to file a program application to get benefits. Thanks to the ANCHOR property tax relief program, properties can get tax relief worth:

  • $400 for qualifying renters
  • $1,500 for qualifying homeowners

Pennsylvania

This state is providing a maximum of $975 to those that meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • Are 50 years old or older as a widow/widower
  • Have a disability and be 18 years old or older
  • Are at least 65 years old

This stimulus is available thanks to a rebate opportunity. Besides the above qualifying criteria, a person needs to meet income criteria too.

Illinois

Through the Individual Income Tax Rebate and Property Tax Rebate, Illinois can provide some stimulus support to qualifying residents. Through the Individual Income Tax Rebate, $50 can be provided to qualifying individuals. This amount can grow because a person can also get a rebate worth $100 per dependent. However, this is limited to 3 dependents which means only an additional $300 at most. Let’s look at an example to get more context. Those that are filing jointly ($100) with 3 dependents ($300) would be eligible to receive a total of $400. People can expect to receive this payment by February 2023. Besides this rebate, there is the Property Tax Rebate. The most amount this rebate can be worth is $300. It’s also worth noting only qualifying residents can benefit from this opportunity. Just like the Income Tax Rebate, people can expect to get this payment by February 2023.

Idaho

Even though tax rebate payments started going out for the 2022 Special Session rebate back in 2022, qualifying recipients could still see these payments come through in early 2023. The exact amount that people can get will vary. Out of the following options, recipients will get the biggest out of the following options:

  • $300 for individual filers like single filers, head of households, etc.
  • $600 for people filing jointly
  • 10% of the amount that was reported on specific tax forms

If people want to get this payment (as either a check or direct deposit payment), they would have needed to make sure they had their 2020 and 2021 income tax returns filed no later than December 31st, 2022.

Massachusetts

Much like other states on this list, the reason for this stimulus payment is due to the state making more than they planned for the 2022 fiscal year. In order to see the refund amount you can check out the refund estimator tool which will provide an estimate on what a resident could expect. The last day that a person can file for this is by September 15th, 2023. That means if someone were to file on that day, they could expect their payment on roughly October 15th, 2023. Basically it’s around a month after the file date!

Overall

Lots of people may think that 2023 means no stimulus payments are going out. However, that’s not the case for residents who live in certain states! So far, there are 7 states that are providing stimulus payments to eligible recipients. However, it’s always important to stay on top of current news from your state. You never know, there may be a stimulus in the works for your state! Make sure to keep an eye out!
