The status of a new economic stimulus package, and the approval of a second stimulus check, is still a big question for US citizens.
We can expect that final decisions won’t be made until after the Nov. 3 election, but every stimulus bill that has been proposed includes a second stimulus payment for individuals and families in need.
This second stimulus check is expected to follow similar guidelines used for the first stimulus check passed in March as part of the CARES Act.
If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and this second stimulus relief bill passes, we can speculate that you would be in a group to receive this second stimulus check first.
How much can I expect to receive?
In most cases, SSDI recipients received $1200 during the first round of stimulus payments.
There are discussions around a shift in qualifications for this second stimulus payment, which could result in a higher stimulus payment for some individuals.
How will I receive a second stimulus check?
In most cases, if a second stimulus check is approved, the IRS will send your check automatically.
However, SSDI recipients are likely to receive payment through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check.
To make sure you are approved for a possible second-round payment, SSDI recipients are encouraged to register as “Non-Filers” on the IRS website by November 21, 2020.
US citizens and permanent residents should use this online tool if their gross income did not exceed $12,200 individually (or $24,400 for married couples) in 2019. The IRS will use this information to determine your eligibility and payment amount.
Still waiting for your first stimulus check?
If you are on SSDI and have not yet received your first-round stimulus check, it is likely the IRS needs additional information to determine your eligibility.
Non-Filers who have still not received their first stimulus payment need to provide information online to the IRS by November 21, 2020 to qualify.
